I often say there are some who are merely photographers, but then there are some like Rod Evans, John Michael Cooper, The Boutwells, Richard Avedon, Nick Brandt and a slew of others past and present who are artists. Some are artists with portraits, some with weddings, some with animals, some with fashions, but they all continue to develop their style to show you what you the average person doesn’t always see, they evoke emotion, they push the boundaries of society, their equipement and their subject. They make you want to look closer.

At DVAGI this year the wonderful clothing on display made me want to look closer. So I contacted the department and they allowed me to come in and photograph some of the collection. The pieces were all amazing in their own way. The details and color stunning. The way they are put together amazing. Basically they are art and I had such a relaxing time photographing these works of art yesterday. I’ve come to realize that any job/skill can also be art, it just depends on the person doing it.

Some examples of artists in not so obvious mediums. Furniture Eames, Herman Miller, Panton, Wegner. Architecture Frank Lloyd Wright. Lighting Roland Simmons. I’d love if you would share some with me from your profession/hobby/passion as I love to surround myself with art in all forms. I think I’m hoping for osmosis with information to happen and transform me into an artist.

Let’s start with my favorite a sari of magnificent colors. This image taken I believe at 1.4 focused closely on the the ends while the golden body is blurred into a milky background.

More from this sari.

… but is is far from it. It is gold threads molded into the shape and sewn on by the little orange threads. Amazing, this is the detail that originally drew me in.

Another piece, I love the different textures.

Look at the detail in the stiching how the threads meeting from opposite angles at the point of the pin strip, that when viewed closely isn’t solid.

Another piece, simple yet detailed and stunning

Cory Ann - Your welcome. Happy to help. You know a great exercise is to go somewhere and give yourself about 10 feet to shoot in and see what you can come up with. It can really make you look.

faithfulmommy - Thanks for this post. It really makes me think about how much is possible with my trusty little camera. I think my task today will be to look around me and see what I can photograph and try to turn to art that is just ordinary to the regular person’s eye.
