The MS Bridal Show 01.28.07

Well I was nervous let me tell you. I tend to be an overachiever. I don't like being mediocre and therefore go all out on stuff like this. I took most of January off from filling orders, sessions and products because I felt it's about the only time I can get a vacation. But of course there was no vacation, I've been spending that time getting things in line for the new year and for all the upcoming events and changes. And this show took up a lot of time. Well now that the show is done it's back to work and well beging processing and filling orders this week.

The MS show was on Sunday and while it was cold out there were still some couple who made their way out. I think the attendance was down because of the cold, but that's ok because that meant more time to spend with people and less bottlenecking in the aisle. Rosemary did a good job of organizing the fashion show which was continuous from 1-5 and the layout was well done. Not a ton of the same vendors right next to each other or anything like that. It could have had more advertising and more brides, but maybe next time.

So anyway to improve my booth from last year here is what we did. I increased the size of one of my stands (thank Mitch) and was able to fit 8 33x47.5 inch prints on canvas up on it. They looked amazing. Thank you to American Color Imaging my lab who created a custom profile for me and got them to me on time and looking awesome for the show. I will be putting these up in the studio they are so beautiful.

Then I brought in a wood floor. It really looked nice and created a whole new feel to the booth. It didn't take us nearly as long as we thought it would to lay it down. I also added more products to look at and lots and lots of new images. I'm still working on getting all my samples together. It's hard to juggle creating the samples and the actual products for the customer, but I'm getting there.

And the big thing for the show was the giveaway and the models. Rosemary so kindly lent me two models who were perfect for the job. And we dressed them in dresses made of my images. When then stepped on the stage the giveaway was announced. To the only fast music of the day they, strutted, criss crossed and posed perfectly. You all should have seen everyones expressions. It was awesome! When I got up from taking pictures and turned around everyone was just standing there, they'd stopped what they were doing and were just still. It was the best! Jessy and Kylie you rocked! All all of the jewelry (on the models and Krisitina and I) was on loan from the fabulous Faini Design. We felt like stars in all that bling bling.

Vendors, if you want to pick a show to do, this is the one. It's well organized, at the best venue with plenty of room, and the proceeds go to a good cause, not a company. And brides and future brides, this is the show to see.

Free Wedding Photography by Cory Ann

For over a year now I have been wanting to do a free wedding. I thought it would be important to keep my grounded and humble and everything in perspective. I haven't been able to figure out a way to get the word out, I really wanted to reach a large base to ensure that a very deserving couple received it, until now.... Today at the MS Bridal Show, actually I'm still there I typed this earlier, during the fashion show the contest was announced.

I would like the recipents of this gift to be a couple with a great story. Two people who are very deserving and excited of having wonderful wedding images by yours truely.

For an available 2007 date I will be giving one deserving couple free wedding coverage. The deserving couple will receive complete coverage of the day from getting ready to the dances by me, a disk of all their images, an engagement session (if they are near by), travel and an album. There will be no cost to the couple, nothing hidden, no tax, nothing. This is my gift.

Here's how it works:
- Today the giveaway is announced. Jan 28, 2007
- Applications are accepted through e-mail at contest@acellis.com until February 10, 2007
- Finalists will be posted on this blog on February 15, 2007
- Blog readers will be voting for the winner by e-mail at contest@acellis.com until February 21, 2007
- The winner will be announced on February 22, 2007 on this blog.

Requirements of entry:

- Must be getting married in 2007. The date and location of your wedding must already be established.
- Let me know the date and location of your wedding.
- Send in the story of why you deserve wonderful wedding images by me along with an image of the couple. Anyone may submit a story.
- Supply me with all your contact information so that I may reach you if you are a finalist. Names, phone, address, e-mail.

That's it. So I can't wait to look through the entries.

Also, while I have had this idea for some time I need to thank my friend Heather Lahtinen of Weddings by Heather and also Jessica Claire becuase if they hadn't have done this I would not have gotten off my butt and did mine. Also to Rosemary the founder of the MS show for allowing me to use the show as an avenue to get the word out to more people.

Corinne and Blake 01.25.07

Yesterday I went to Sioux Falls to do Corinne and Blake's engagement images. I've known them for about a year now. This time last year I met them at the Hy-vee bridal show. Blake owns Ideal Wedding Center (over by Interlude Bridal), well anyway they were at the show and the next few shows as well. I got to know them and they are awesome. At the time they weren't engaged, but Corinne knew already she wanted me to do her wedding images. I love a girl who knows what she wants- especially when it's me (ok that doesn't sound right...) Anyway after they got engaged they booked me and I couldn't be more excited. They are so fun and their wedding is going to be great!

Here they are being such troopers out in the snow. You guys did awesome!
CA

Corinne has got the cutest butt. (ok that's twice I guess I should assure you all that I'm married.. to a man)

And Blake says he doesn't smile well for the camera- I caught him in this one.

B Family 01.23.07

Tuesday after returning from Sioux Falls I headed over to the B's. And I loved all the wonderful natural light streaming in their home. I tell you all I need is light to inspire me. We and a cute family with an adorable little girl and brand new baby boy sure don't hurt anything.

Reminders

Just a few reminders for those of you who don't check all the time and don't look at the archives. I will be occasionally offering specials and such on the blog. This is the only place I plan to do these type of things. I will not be offering coupons and such that are printed and distributed so be sure to check here as they often will have time limits and I will be sticking to those time limits.

I will also be giving away a prize for every 100 posts. I will not be giving any more heads up on these. You will just need to keep an eye out.

And in case your wondering why. Well I want to reward all my faithful reads and past or upcoming customers. It's a pet peeve of mine to see all the MediaCom commercials for cheap cable and internet for 6 months but it's only for new customers. I really wish they'd show their appreciation to those of us that have been customers for years. So anyway I'm going to run my business different and while I do want to get new customers I believe that treating my current customers well is the best way to do it. And I love to work with the same people over and over again!

And don't forget the MS Bridal Show this coming Sunday at the Convention Center in Sioux Falls. I think it's the best. I'll have to compare vendors to see if it's the biggest, but it's big. And my booth is going to kick butt and you want to see it. It's cheap to get in and the money all goes to MS so show up, show some support, say hi and see what I have in store for all of you! Seriously even if your already married you want to come!

Print Costs: Explained

I often hear about the competitions print prices being too high. Well I usually stand up for them as first we need to compare the same products. It is not merely a piece of paper you are purchasing. I know this is hard to understand. It took me a while to understand it. It's especially hard to understand that when Harold's offers $.19 4x6 prints and professional start anywhere from $10-$80 for the same size.

So I thought I would help you make sense of why and then maybe you would better understand the process of pricing. This is both for photographers and for my customers. As I think education is at the root of understanding. If you are a new photographer and are struggling with understanding the pricing give me a call and I'd be happy to help with the basics. I also offer private consultations.

Let's compare costs and services:

Harold's, Walmart and the like:

Employee pay: around $6 to $7 per hour (guessing)
Their material costs:
- Paper and the machines

Their process:
Kiosk for you to place your own order
They put the images in an envelope
They ring you up and you are forever gone.

AC Ellis Photography:
Employee pay: around $8 to $15 per hour
My material costs:
- The print from my lab, which by the way is on professional paper and costs me more, way more than you pay at Harold's
- The image is sprayed for protection
- Larger prints are mounted and textured
- Machines, computer to color correct and to order the prints
- Some photographers do even more than I do.

My process:
- Take order, either through our custom cart, in person, or over the phone.
- Enter the order into our accounting system
- Process the payment, sometime remind someone to pay who forgot to send it in. Reference credits in your collections etc.
- Pull image from achives
- Optimize and Retouch the image
- Order Image
- Receive order from lab, check order
- Package the order ( not just an envelope like these stores. Our packaging protects your images in transit)
- Mail or deliver the order: mailing means more packaging, delivering means more time.
- Follow up: We reprint it if you don't like something.

So basically you are not simply paying for a piece of paper, but the time and talent we use to make your image better. And we spend the time to make things right. Just like your time is worth something in your chosen career so is ours. If we only charged the hard cost of the item and never for our time we would not make any money and mind as well take a job elsewhere. Hope that makes sense.

However I do understand that costs can add up so I do offer your proof disks for sale or in wedding collections. Part of me doesn't like doing it as I would love you to have the best possible image printed and not merely your proof, but I also understand that many of you want that disk and I want to make you happy and of course the images are still great with out the pump.

And to show you the difference between a print from your proofs and our special touch here are some examples. Sometimes everything is done by hand and sometimes it's a combinations of plug-ins, actions and such. Some of our actions I have made and others I have purchased and use as is or modify. Your all beautiful anyway, but sometimes we need a little something to show us at our best. Of course you need to start with a good image.

This image is optimized by using the new kick ass Totally Rad Actions from the Boutwells. I went to their and the Coopers Anti-Workshop in Texas in Nov.

Spoiled Little Boys

Thursday Ayden, Jody, Wyatt and I headed out and traveled down to Omaha to spoil the boys. We got tickets to see the Broadway Musical The Lion King. We LOVED IT! Simply amazing. This was my first time at a musical and I was impressed at how great the performers were. They were into the part, their body movements, facial expressions, everything! I was also intrigued by the lighting. I think if I studied under the lighting director for a year I would be a much better photographer. The placement, intensity, direction, etc. I was just awe struck from the whole thing.

Some images, cameras weren't allowed and I wanted to respect that, but they allowed me to take a couple afterwards:

Walking up to the Orpheum.

The boys in their seats right after the show.

The boys outside showing us their lions and roars.

Our seats. Were right there in the front row the first four seats from the aisle. They were some of the best. You can see the Orchestra pit right in front of seats. There were times when we could reach out and touch the actors.
Ayden and I in our hotel room at the Redick Plaza Hotel which was conveniently located right across the street from the Orpheum.

Jody and Wyatt.

Then the next morning we headed out to the Old Market and then to the Henry Doorly Zoo. There are some great shops there. I really enjoyed some of the clothing boutiques like Nebraska Clothing Co., Nouvelle Eve and Paper Dolls and the boys like the Toy Chest of course.
I want a cool parking garage... Wyatt in the parking garage.

Let me tell you finger puppets rock! I swear these kids would have been happy going all the way to Omaha just to get these fifty cent finger puppets. We need more let me know if you know where to get them.

And we at lunch at the great Upstream Brewery which had wonderful light.

And one of my favorite animals as the zoo. The turtles. They just amaze me.

All images taken with a D200 and 50mm 1.4 lens.

Black Tie & The Elliotts

Yesterday I went down to Sioux Falls, to go to the Black Tie Bridal Show. I think it was a good show, much better than the Hy-Vee show the weekend prior. They still have some stuff to work out, but it is becoming a better show. I think that next year they will need to move it as it was very packed in the dated Ramkota.

I know I'm critical of other photographers, I take it personally when unethical business practices are used by my peers. It hurts the industry, the brides and sometimes me. I hold them accountable, some don't like it, but those that are ethical do and realize it's easier to just be honest and be friends from the start.

The Elliotts are some of my photog friends. I think they are great and I enjoy helping them to develop their business and their images and they do the same for me. I love to share and give back and I think it just helps the profession as a whole. Dan and Kari are one of the few SD photographers that I refer to and for good reason. I think all you brides out there can only benefit by us photogs working together to push each other and to develop a referral base when we are booked.

So while it may seem different and abnormal I decided to help out the Elliotts and worked in their booth for part of the show. It was fun I learned a lot by being at this and last weeks shows and not having to work my own booth. I'm excited to show you what I've been putting together for the MS show on the 28th at the Convention Center in Sioux Falls.

Anyway after the show the Elliotts were nice enough to take me out to dinner at HuHot - love this place! And then since the roads were so darn bad they talked me into staying over, served me wine and good conversation. Today I really wanted to get some images of them playing in the cold. Well I didn't dress for the occasion and my fingers were freezing so I didn't get too many but here are a few. And here is Dan's Blog on the Day.

Cora 01.15.07

Today the Boysens came up to do a bit of work. For Alysia to get an image and create a card and for Mitch to get some stuff for the upcoming bridal show (which you all know you really really want to come to!). Well I just had to get an image of my goddaughter Cora. I've been so busy that I don't have a chance to see my godchildren enough and therefore not enough images of them.

So here she is, she's getting so big and she's so happy and loves kisses.

Family Sessions

When is the best time to do your family session? The answer is always NOW!

I hear it all the time, I want to loose a few pounds, I want to have the fall leaves, or the green grass, or the snow. I need to get my hair done, I need to buy some new clothes... You know, you've done it. The list goes on and on. But really let's stop and think. Is there ever a better time than right now? No.

As much as we think we are, we are not having these images done for ourselves (the parents), we are having them done for our children and their children. It is generations down the line that will cherish these images.

And why should you get interactive fun images out of the studio? Our children really will only care a little for that image of them on the backdrop, but they'll care a lot about that image of dad tossing them in the air while they giggle histerically. And they will love that image of mom cuddling up with them reading a book or smothering them with kisses. They will need and want these images to remember all you did together, the love you shared and they will be a cherished heirloom. Think what image do you want of you and your parents.

Our children will not care that we are carrying a few extra pounds. They will not care that our hair is slightly out of style, or that dad is wearing that ugly shirt. They love us just the way we are, flaws and all. Ayden even likes my horrible singing voice. So get off your duff, schedule a session and get those images. And even though I like the interactive images I will take the group shots too. But seriously it is best if you come prepared to play and just let me shoot. Don't tell the kids to smile or say cheese don't get angry or stressed when they aren't sitting still. Just let them be kids and you play with them.

And in keeping with the importance of having family images as well as my customer appreciation season...

I am giving away a family session to a deserving family. That's right a full session, on location. And I will be giving the deserving family a large wall portrait and their disk of images.

I know that sometimes people really just can't afford to have this done. It's not a matter of prioritizing, hmm new jacket or family photos. It's a matter of they need to buy food, have medical expenses and other such things. These types of families are the ones I would like to give a session to. One that is truely deserving.

So this is what I would like you readers to do. Send in your nominations for a deserving family that you know. Just write me a little something of why you think they deserve to have these images made of them by me. I will pick a deserving family. And for sending in these nominations the person who nominates the deserving family will receive a session and wall print of their own.

So send in your nominations to contest@acellis.com
- Tell me why they deserve the family session.
- Let me know the names, address and contact information of yourself and this deserving family.
- If you've got a digital snapshot send that too.
- You may nominate more than one.
- January 26, 2007 will be the deadline for submission.
- January 28, 2007 I will announce the deserving family right here on my blog.

Ok, that's it. I hope to hear from many of you soon!

New Websites!

Finally, I have a couple of new websites. Some of you have noticed the steady changes over the last few weeks. The new color scheme, the new home page, and even some of you noticed the new wedding website AC Ellis Weddings and now there is also AC Ellis Portraits.

I didn't announce them until now becuase I was finishing up the wedding site and preparing the portrait site. They are now ready for your viewing pleasure. I decided to seperate the two sites so that I could better categorize and show my images. Weddings and portraits are totally different and therefore deserve their own sites. Plus this way I can show a lot more images. I think the old site had a total of about 90-120 images. The two new sites together have almost 600 images between the two of them. And they are BIG, BEAUTIFUL and you are able to enjoy them better. And I do plan on updating it more often so I would expect to see new images there on a regular basis.

Here is the new splash page, where you can make your new home and choose between the wedding or portrait site or the blog. Thank you to Heather Lahtinen for helping me get this together.

And this is the new wedding home page. Did you notice I renamed the bridal sessions couture sessions? You know I dislike the term bridal. AC Ellis Weddings

And the new portrait home page. AC Ellis Portraits

Ok in keeping with my customer appreciation season I'm giving away prints. To any of you who appear on either site. If you look through and see even one image from your session or wedding, (excluding commercial clients) e-mail me which image (portfolio name and slide #, if there are two on the side specify left or right) is your fav and I will send you a print of it. I will randomly select a few of you to send a wall print. All requests must be received by January 24, 2007 send requests to prints@acellis.com

Please let me know what you think about the new sites, blog, colors, logo, etc. I love feedback. Thank you all.

And anyone who tried to use the contact form on the wedding site and didn't hear back from me- well apperantly my e-mail thought it was spam so I just got it working again. I did not ignore you, I just didn't get anything so please contact me again. Sorry.

For all you photogs out there: I am very happy with the company I went with. They are Livebooks and talk to Jon at 415-295-8410. Yes it is a template site. I didn't want a template site. I actually had already designed my own site over a year ago and went searching for a coder. I hired one in July and was supposed to have a new site in 6 weeks, well when I didn't have much of anything in Dec. I got worried. I stumbled upon Livebooks and made the leap when I noticed that their site was almost exactly like the one I had already designed. So I got the site I wanted, the great backend, great customer service and I'm happy now. If you are looking for a company this is a great one.

Disclaimer: For my local competition- please find another company. Currently I have the only livebooks site in SD and I'd like to keep it that way. If you e-mail I can give you the names of three good template companies. Happy to help, but I just don't want to have the same site or company as you. No offense, it's just my desire to be different, it's who I am, please understand.

A little of love- from lovesac

Well my little boy is going to be famous.... no really but the lovesac peeps (people) must think he's about as cute as I do. Maybe there's a commercial gig in here somewhere I can do some sweet family pics with the sacs.

Anyway I'm getting side tracked. So you must go here www.lovesac.com and see my babe on the home page. And then if you are on myspace go here for an animated gif of Ayden showing off the best way to play on a sac. Lovesac on MySpace

Thank Double J for all the love. Ayden thinks it's super cool that he's on your site. You'll have to post a message and link on my My MySpace. You should head on over to facebook too. Don't know if your on there or not.
CA

PS. I tried to do a screen capture, but it came up all fuzzy if someone can do it for me so I can save it for Ayden I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you Kris for the screen capture:

LoveSac

I know some other photographers read this so I'm going to try to share a few things I like as far as education and equipment every now and then. Of course all of you in SD, especially Brookings, who are my direct competitors this is not for you so quit reading and do your own thing. Seriously.

Ok this lovely piece of furniture is called a LoveSac. I showed you when I got my first one. My big one is a MovieSac and is huge. I have a red microsuede cover on it. My newest addition is a KidSac. It has a blue cord cover on it. You can get many different covers to exchange and they are washable. The slightly older kids love them, prego mommies think their o so comfy and babies, well they lay in it all cozy and let me take lots of images of them. So if you have a small space a KidSac is great. They are an inexpensive "prop" (did I just say that?) for the studio if you shoot in it. Or if you want to take it to a snow filled field like Ayden and I do.

They are having a sale right now too. And I just noticed on their site that they don't have anymore KidSacs- they do have the G2 KidSac. And the new pillowsac is looking sweet. I've got my eye on some sactionals too.

On another note. All you parents out there... the kids love these things! Hours of entertainment. I would someday love to have a family/game room filled with nothing but sacs.

ETA: (just for Mike) No they are not just a bean bag. They are better.

My New Fetish- Purses

My sisters and old high school and college friends who read this will probably think I'm lying, but the jock now likes nice shoes, clothes and.... purses. I blame Kristi for this. I swear sometimes I never should have stepped foot in Tuli. Although this purse didn't come from Tuli that's where most of mine have come from. So if you want to feed your purse fetish head in there cause she's got a great selection from you to choose from. And she's having a big sale right now by the way.

Albums and Books

After 3 years in business, 2 full wedding seasons (about 50 weddings), countless portrait sessions and a lot of education and deliberation I have come to the conclusion that the best way to preserve your images an therefore memories is in a book or album.

Why? Becuase most of you who have purchased your disk haven't printed but a couple. I haven't heard of one of you who made an album. Some of you only bought a handful of prints, no disk and no album. Let's think 3 more generations down the line... Your great grandkids want to look through your images. Well you pull out your beautiful handmade, custom designed album. It's beautiful, it's still classic, it's design isn't dated (cause we don't design like that). They ohhh and ahhh at you crying, laughing, point out how beautiful you were. Or they can try to find some old CD or DVD ROM, cause you know they'll be like an 8-track is to us (does anyone have one of those?). And labor to look through them on the disk one at a time, not together like they should.

So yeah I think that an album or a book is the best way to show your images, although I know most of you want your disk. So to possibly persuade you I'm going to make you a deal. Take that money you were going to buy your disk with and put it towards an album or book of $700 or more and I'll give you your small print disk. I guarntee you'll be happy you got an album. So here's the special and a couple of images from some albums we delivered before the holidays. They are so pretty!

And albums and books aren't just for weddings. I take a lot of images of families. I show all the details and interaction. I think these are great ways to get many of those images together. I know some of you scrapbook (Jody, Corrina) and I think that's a great way too. But for those of us that don't or don't have great SIL's (this means Sister in law by the way) that do you can have us do it instead. You can also combine images through out multiple session to have your child's first year or first 5 years.
