Mother's Day Special

Alright are you ready for an AC Ellis Mother's Day Treat? Well I've held back doing this for years as I haven't had the right space to do it. But with word from the landlord that we move in next weekend it's a go. And what better subjects to practice on than the landlord who has the keys before me?

On Mothers Day and on Monday following Mother's Day I am inviting all mothers to come in for a quality image with your children and grandchildren. Each grouping is $15 and includes a 5x7 print that you can pick up at later at the studio. Of course if you want to purchase additional images later you may. The session takes only a short period of time (about 5-10 minutes) and you can continue on with your day. No appointment is necessary, just stop on in.

Bring your mom's, your belly (if expecting), your children, your children's children. Let's see what the most generations is we can get. You can also break it down to individual images with each child. What every you like.

The $15 fee basically covers the cost of your print, so the sitting is included- free of charge. See the family tips on the right of the blog in resources for some good clothing chioces. I have selected afternoon on Mother's Day so that I can spend some time with Ayden and afternoon on Monday so you can either come in on your lunch break or after work if you can't get away during the day.

Call or e-mail with any questions. I hope to see many of you there.
CA

When:
Sunday May 13th 2pm-7pm
Monday May 14th 12pm-7pm

Where:
AC Ellis Photography New Studio! See address on side of blog or on last post.

Who:
Anybody who is expecting to be a mother soon, currently a mom, grandma, or a child bringing their mom in. Guys are only included if they are the children (adult children ok, but not as dad). This is not a family photo opportunity it is a mother and children/grandchildren opportunity.

Today I met Nikki and her family at the new space for a couple of quick mother images to show you all as examples. Of course there is no furniture or anything yet, but you get the idea. And some may be delivered in color, I just liked these in B&W. Here are the groupings that we did with Nikki's family. You can do any variation you want, but each group is $15.

New Studio

It's official I have a new space. Just a couple of finishing touches this week and we move in next weekend. I may not be the big one I dream of, but it's all mine. And Nikki has been great to work with so that while it was being built I got to have input on what it would look like. I have wonderful concrete floors, very high ceilings extra windows for light, a good location with no stairs going up or down. It's all mine! Woohoo!

And what does this mean for all you fabulous current and hope to be clients? More session options, studio proofing if desired, corporate headshots, fun little get togethers and specials. Now it will take me a while to get the whole thing in order, decorated and ready to go. But please keep reading as I'm going to be posting about all kinds of new stuff.

No the addition of this space does not mean I'll be giving in to the traditional backdrops and such. It means I have been working to develop a style of my own and now I have a space to take it farther. So no stuffy poses and backdrops, just lots of free flowing fun with style and creativity. What you've come to expect!

The new address is listed on the right of the blog. But basically I'm in Galleria III, on Trail Ridge Road behind Sunflower, Mad Jacks, Speedy Cleaners and such. I will still be working the office out of my home, but this place is going to be so great!

Stay tuned!
CA

Just one little image, look I have a sidewalk. This is the entrance. More to come as furnishings and decorating get underway. I'm so excited!!!!

Last week Allison and Charlie got a beautiful day for images. We found this great little run down shack and made the best of it. They are so in love and excited about their images and wedding. Of course this just gets me excited for them also. Too bad I have to wait until 2008. Here are a couple of images from their session.

Ayden's Roar

Ok this is my first attempt at video in my blog. This was a lot tougher to do then I thought it would be. I'm not super techy, but mildly so, but this was all just ridiculous. I officially need to take a course on video importing and export.

Anyway, while I love love love still photos there are just some things you need sound on. And Ayden's most spectacular roar and snorts are them.

Fingers crossed let's see if this works. - Alright so I don't know how to get controls on it, but it appears if you double click it it plays and click it again and it stops. Must work harder on this. Now we have controls Yeah! If your watching it let it load a bit, you'll notice it loading with the light grey bar then hit the play button.

ETA:
Special thanks to Chris Mann of Tropical Imaging for help on exporting the video

And of course Heather of Weddings by Heather because I stole her code to get it into the blog.

Another one. It must be the Spring weather. I photographed Amanda's graduation portraits last summer and we also had the pleasure of creating her custom announcements and signature book.

Thank you ladies for the nice notes. Good luck in college Amanda!

Cory Ann,
Thank you for the great experience taking my pictures! I had a blast and you are very good at what you do! Also I would like to thank you for the iPod shuffle! I love the color and appreciate it! Thank you so much!

Thanks! They look awesome! (a bunch of blah blah blah about billing)... so I can pay you for such an awesome job! Also, thanks for the gift for Amanda! She is so excited! She has always wanted an i-pod and didn’t have one. (and green is her favorite color—how did you know!??) You are awesome!

From Leah and John

And it is so cute. I put it into my dining room. Thank you to Leah and John who made my evening. I know it's stupid that little notes from clients can lift me up. But you know I invest so much into this business. I'm the type of person who just pours their heart into their work. I want to be great at the things I do. I want to make my clients days better, I want to surpass their expectations. I get down when it doesn't happen. We all know we are far quicker to point out shortfalls than positives. And I have been trying so hard to improve my images and service and to get notes from happy customers just validates all that hard work.

OK so now I'm a sap and starting to tear up. My gosh, I must be PMS'ing or something (hubby look out- ooo that explains my stress that last couple of nights- ok Kristina look out)... back on track. Anyway it really does mean a lot! I love that so many of my customers become friends and I really get to create for them on many occasions.

Last October I traveled to the Black Hills for the the wedding of Leah and John. They had hired another photographer, but after I photographed a session with her sister Angie she was turned onto my site. I remember talking to her on the phone. I didn't want to take a wedding away from another photog. I looked them up on-line and they were ok. Not the best but she was getting a lot more product for her money. I told her that and her response was somewhere along the lines of what good is the product if it doesn't have the images you want in the style you want? I couldn't agree more. I knew Leah got it and got me. She valued photography, just hadn't found me first. She sacrificed her deposit with the other photog and paid more for less product with me. What a chance to take. I feel bad for the other photog, but since I didn't pursue Leah and I understand the importance of these images I couldn't turn her down when she told me they decided to book me. I'm glad they did, it was an amazing wedding. You can see their images all over my site. They were blown up huge for the bridal booth. That confidence they had in me motivated me and I'm glad they think it was worth it!

Thank you so much for the note and the super cool Bonsai tree! Now I have to keep it alive. Hope to see you again soon.
CA

The note reads:

Cory Ann:
I know you must hear this all the time, but I just have to join in and tell you how fantastic you are. You captured our day better than I had even imagined. Every image brings back the emotion and job of that day. Switching photographers was the best decisioin we ever made! i can't tell you how much it means to me to have rockin images to share with everyone. Keep it up, and someday I can have my entire house decorated with AC Ellis Photography.
Leah and John Anderson =)

And for the record I don't hear it that much, and if I did it would never be too much!

Jacob + Pennie: 04.21.07

Pennie and Jacob made it back and got hitched! Their family and friends were so excited to be with them and part of the wedding. But nothing compares to how they were together. I was able to steal them away for a few moments and witness how together they transformed.

Although windy it was a beautiful day full of love and laughter. Many people came together to make this wedding happen. And all went incredibly well.

Thank you very much for your service. I hope you two are enjoying the rest of your vacation!

The Traveling Shovel

Well us photogs are a strange group. Well not all of us, but the good ones, he he. Anyway there is this neat endeavor that is happening and I plan on following it and being a part of it. If you would like another blog type of site to check regularly this would be a good one. This is going to be incredibly challenging for each photographer to come up with something unique to do with an inanimate object. The shovel was originally owned by the wonderful John Michael Cooper with the current owner being the talented and creative Rita and Joel Wiebner who spearheaded this project. Anyway enough of that read more about it and follow The Traveling Shovel here.

I don't know when I will get it, but darn the pressure is on to do something amazing.

From Eric Hoien (a guest)

At just about every wedding there is at least one guest who is an amatuer photographer. Who has a digital SLR camera like a Rebel or a Nikon N40-N80. Many think they are doing the couple a favor and taking images to give them, most of them are harmless, some hinder me doing my job and I wish they'd just put the camera away and enjoy the day as a guest.

I'm used to these guests and know that they are just trying to be helpful so I do my absolute best to work with them while not loosing my focus. After all I know my images are going to be better and I don't view them as competition. I just ask that they don't shoot over my should and stay out of my way so they aren't in the frame or distracting the subjects. Eric here was great, he was not a problem at all. and then he followed up with these kind words.

Thank you Eric for sending this note!
CA

Cory Ann,

I assume you are the photographer for Elizabeth & Evan's wedding in Sioux Falls; if you are not, this email is for that photographer. I am the old uncle that kept getting in the way and taking what I thought were pretty decent photos until I saw yours, and realized how amazing you are as an artist. I saw the slide show; with the combination of timing, music, and above the top shelf images, I was truly inspired...you have a gift that I have not seen much of. My brother recently got married this past summer, and I was trying to find someone with a creative eye, and unfortunatly, I was not aware of you...the photos he got were decent (out of Minneapolis), but nothing with the type of uniqueness that you show....anyone with training can get technically good photos, but not everyone has the ability to see....I can see that you have both. I would be interested in what could be arranged to book a sitting for my family in Spirit Lake, IA. I look forward to hearing from you.

All the best, Eric Hoien

Man I love my little boy. Isn't he just so cute! And his imagination is amazing. It's fun to give him washable markers and just let it fly. You all need to keep me in check I just don't take enough images of him anymore. Partly from work, partly from more playing with him than watching him. But anyway tell me if you haven't seen his mug on here in a while.

Edj Design

My graphic designer, sometimes assistant, past assistant and friend Erin Nelson has finally launched her own website. I'm so happy for her. She used to be at a deadend job with too long of a commute, missing her babies, not appreciated and now this. I was happy when she started her own business and even more so now. You know, I helped her come up with the name amongst other things.

As you know I can't do it all. So I refer to Erin. I think her graphic design talents lay in logo and identity creation. She comes up with some great stuff! Of course I'm also a fan of her album and card designs as I've trained and worked with her on that so I'm a little biased. But really she is good so all you business owners out there if you need some new identity pieces, a new logo to start to develop your brand, brochures or anything she's the go to person.

Dustin + Candace: 04.14.07

This weekends wedding was wonderful! Now I must admit I was very very nervous. You see Andy was an usher and Ayden was a ring bearer. I kept thinking what if Andy isn't watching Ayden and he disturbs me and I miss a shot? I would not want that too happen. As even though I know this couple they hired me and I was there to do a job and do it well.

Anyway Dustin and Candace were amazing, they opted not to see each other until the ceremony and that gave me plenty of time before hand for group and individual images. I think they gave me more time than any other couple ever. And they will be glad they did. The ceremony was emotional and short and sweet. I was up front by the mom's for the giveaway and was able to capture some special moments. Candace left her hair down, which I don't often see and let me tell you she looked fabulous! Dustin thought so too.

After the ceremony we did the formals in all of 18 minutes and headed out for a sparkler exit. After that I had a little alone time with the couple while the guests made their way to the reception site. Many are afraid that their guests will have to wait too long, but let me tell you this time is so nice and relaxing to have and the amount and quality of the images really show. Don't be afraid to schedule in this time. If you have an early wedding you can even schedule some time to go out and about. Trust me the guests don't mind, do what you want.

The reception was at the Washington Pavilion, my favorite SD reception location. Candace did all the planning and decorations herself, she is a talented florist and everything looked great. Dustin and Candace entered and led right into their first dance, I love this! The food was so good. Mmmmmm. And the rest of the night wonderful. It was a great wedding and when I finally put the camera down and joined the party that was great too.

Congratulations you two, you are going to have a wonderful life together! Thank you for picking me to be the photog and my boys to be part of your group.

From Judy

Today I came downstairs to check my e-mail and start my day. I typically get 100's of e-mails a day, mostly junk and the rest from clients. Occasionally I get a nice little note. Today's is from Judy. This last summer I photographer her daughter Lisa's graduation portraits and we just delivered her announcements.

Here is the note. Thank you for sending it Judy.
CA

Good Morning Cory Ann!

Wow! We found quite a surprise in our mailbox last night. Lisa opened her package from AC Ellis Photography wondering what we had received and we were both shocked to find the generous gift enclosed. Thank you so much!! I am sending the thank you because I hope to be able to borrow the Shuffle a few times too on walks until Lisa leaves for college.

On your blog, you mentioned that you were inspired by Newell Rubbermaid company's great customer service. Well, this tops getting painting supplies!!! (We do pay attention to that blog!) So again, thank you, thank you!! Not many businesses surprise me with great customer service - but you certainly did!! Going above and beyond is what it is all about and you certainly get that!!

Happy Spring!

P.S. We received the grad announcements and they look great too!

Well there are obviously a ton of nominations so if you try to find me on the list I'm way down at the bottom with just 3 votes (mine and erin's and someone from Portugal), but if you click this link it will take you straight to me.

So since I spend so much time blogging for all you loyal readers if anyone wants to go and vote and show me a bit of love I'd appreciate it and validate the time I spend doing this. So far the leadre has about 74 votes, now I know I at least have that many reader. You have to sign in to vote, but it's quick. You can vote until June 2, so spread the word. I'll try to post updates.

Thanks.

How I keep my cards straight on a shoot

I take a lot of images while I'm on a shoot, weather it be a portrait session or a wedding. So I always carry a lot of CF Cards with me. To a wedding I take over 35Gigs with me on a portrait session much less. My cards are a variety of cards from 1GB-4GB Sandisk, Lexar and Kingston.

What I do to keep them straight is I number them 1-whatever on the back I also put my phone number, reward and www.acellis.com. I do all of this to be able to keep track and if something tragic did happen and I lost one hopefully then someone would be honest enough to return it to me. I always strart at a different number so that they get close to the same amount of use.

The cards are then put into a Think Tank Pixel Pocket Rocket purchased from Roberts Imaging. I put all the cards in sequentially with the number side facing up. As I fill a card it goes back in the case with the front of the card (the side that has none of my written numbers on it) facing up. Here is an image of the case with three cards looking like they are used. The case does close with velcro, so if using at a wedding prior to the ceremony I make sure the velcro flap is folded over in the event I need to change cards I don't make noise. But typically I'm putting a new cards right before hand so that I don't run out at a key moment. And I never use a card that I can see the front of!

Another card tip to some newbies out there, if you accidentally reformat your card before downloading the data, stop using the card, do not continue to take images on it. Remove the card from the camera and set it aside as used there is a bunch of software out there to recover the images, they aren't really lost until you write over them again. No I haven't ever accidentally reformatted my card. I just know from talking with other photogs.

Heather is so smart... Lightroom

I have this photog friend in PA, her name is Heather and she is one of the smartest women I know. Well she's also a geek and so she went to Photoshop World recently. She came back all excited about Adobe Lightroom. I had been running CS2 for Photoshop and using Bridge and ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) to edit and process images, but then I downloaded and started working with the CS3 beta. Unfortunately Bridge has been quiting on me about 5 times a day minimum and was seriously slowing down my workflow. So I decided to give Lightroom a try, and I'm lovin' it. Heather is awesome she walked me through getting started and now I cannot believe how little I need to open Photoshop to do the basics to my files. I think this is one program I'm giong to be using daily. So if you need a new editing tool test this out. They have a trial for free for 30 days and it's also currently on sale.

One thing I really love is pulling up multiples of the same image to look at side by side. This is very time saving as far as formals and portraits go to pick the best of the bunch. Here is an image of Lightroom open or the Cinema Displays (which the price just dropped on).

And of course she knows all the short cuts so I had to take notes to learn them.

Dani's Grad Announcements

More wonderful work from Erin.

I know lots of Scriptina font, but even when we don't design with it, they ask for it. It's funny because by the time we are tired of a font around here it's just popular for everyone else. That is why my logo is clean and simple with it's font. Once you start to look all the time you can actually kinda tell when some are created. Like Papyrus font. O my gosh that got used so darn much in the last few years. I can just see us in 20 years saying, "yep that was designed in the 2000's, look at that font." he he. It's ok for a little of dating on things like cards, but on stuff like the images, books and albums we find it so important to make things clean and simple which equalls timeless and classic. We want our clients to pic up their books and albums years down the road and not laugh at the layout, only their big bangs and rolled up jeans. Ok so none of you have big bangs and rolled up jeans, but it will be something to replace those in the future.
CA

Ok back to Dani, she decided on two cards.

(PRODUCT) RED

Today FedEx brought me a little something. This beautiful piece of technology. A Red iPod Nano. It is so small it's almost as small as the apple remotes. My hubby keeps stealing my iPod Video for the speaker system upstairs so I decided to pick up a Nano and what better than a distinctive Red one to match my distinctive style. I'll be filling it with music but also tons of images, it's a great way to show off your work when you run into someone when your out and about. I wish I could get one in each color - you know the new accessory of the season.

In case you haven't heard (PRODUCT) RED is a movement where the consumer can choose to purchase products and services from (PRODUCT) RED partners. A portion of the proceeds from the purchase of these products and services go to fight AIDS. Some of my favorites (PRODUCT) RED products are the Apple Nano of course and the GAP clothing. The marketing genius behind them just inspires me. The words on the shirts all contain the word red with in a larger word, Examples: Inspi(red), Admi(red), Cente(red), and Treasu(red). I wish I had come up with something like this. It actually reminds me of a photographer in Cali with an equally ingenius marketing scheme, Becker. If your a photog it's worth checking out.

Ok back to the goods.
